Its just like Christmas for gardeners at this time of year. The seed catalogues that we pored over during winter are put aside and now we are patiently waiting for seed orders to arrive. I received my first seed order in record time. Through my involvement with the Ladner Seedy Saturday I was put in touch with Heritage Harvest Seed and they sent me a catalogue. I found fun seeds in there like Drunken Woman Lettuce. Now you have to wonder how it got its name. I also ordered Salpiglossis or Painted Tongue, an annual flower that is hard to find at garden centers here. I love old fashioned flowers so I ordered some Larkspur. We will see how successful I will be at growing it this year. Its one of those seeds that really likes to sow itself, kind of like poppies. I am also going to try growing Lavender from seed. I know its easy from cuttings but will try it this way. I hope to grow several varieties of Lavender for a plant sale this summer.
I am still waiting on seeds from Richter's Herbs and Vesey's Seeds. Heritage Harvest Seeds arrived in six days from half way across Canada. I call that good customer service. What are you growing from seed this year?
I am getting ready for Super Sow Sunday on February 5. While everyone else watches football many gardeners across the country will be planting and tweeting about seeds and what they are planting. Having an event like this makes me get started after a winter of lounging around. It brings back the excitement of the first seed germinating and the hopes and dreams we all have for our summer gardens to come. Am I a little crazy? Yep, just a bit, crazy about gardening!
I love looking through garden catalogues, it makes winter bearable. I haven't quite decided on what to order yet.
